Academia – ALM Process using TFS 2008 and Scrum : Day 1

Today my colleagues Jean-Pierre Fouche (a fellow Grahamstowntonian), Henk and i embarked on a journey with the Rhode’s honor's students taking them thru the ALM process using Team Foundation Server 2008 and the Scrum methodology, where they have to create a simple calculator.
We started of with a nice breakfast at the Graham hotel at 07h00, we walked to Rhodes and started unpacking in Hamilton building, East lab, 201. After sorting out all the nerve wracking stuff like power points that did not want to work and screen resolutions that was not compatible with the overhead projector we started to settle in.
Jean-Pierre started with the introductions and laying down the rules for the students. I did a little scrum exercise devised by Boris Gloger, in the garden (Ball Points delivery in two minutes) those that have attended the Scrum Master training will know what i am talking about see the rules to the game here, I think this was the highlight for the students, they really enjoyed it and the practical explanation going with this made a good impact on the students
We covered topics such as:
Introduction to TFS
Methodologies
SCRUM
Demo on TFS Project Creation (using the Light Weight Scrum template) and the TFS Admin Tool for assigning the necessary security
The turnout for the session was tremendous, part of the plan was to split the students into groups having the roles as defined in your typical development scenario, i.e. product owner, developer, tester and analyst.
Team’s had to give themselves names and decide who in the team would be playing what role. We created the Team Projects for them and assigned the product owners from the various team’s the necessary access to be able to administer the various roles.
That was day one! Another 4 exciting days to go where we tomorrow we cover Design and Planning. Stay tuned!
