South African Business Intelligence User Group Launch in Cape Town, a Success!! (Post Event Info)

Wow that was an awesome event, and perfect way start yet another great user group/community in Cape Town and Western Cape (we rule!!) and I'm proud that I was part of it. The event that was represented by prominent BI people from all sides of our industry also featured a brilliant presentation by John Swanepoel of Shoprite on one of the best examples I’ve seen on how BI should be done (Shoprite BI case study), I want to thank him for that and I hope to see more of his work in near future. Also...

Microsoft Office Interactive Developer Map

If you're an Office (OBA, SharePoint 2007, PerformancePoint 2007, Unified Communications, Groove, Project Server, Visio, etc etc) Developer , you're going to love this application. It's very useful, especially to people that are still grasping how the full Office offering from Microsoft works (Enterprise Content Management, Business Intelligence, etc etc) and also, it's also quite funky to use. Here's the link: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/office/bb497969.aspx "The Microsoft...

Why your MOSS 2007 powered organisation will most likely need Extranet Collaboration Toolkit for SharePoint

As many organisations go deeper into Enterprise Content Management, their ECM systems become more and more business critical. This means that they start hitting the common boundaries and problems when it comes to all commonly known collaborative business systems, such as their availability anywhere and everywhere. For example when it comes to having to work on your documentation, files and other critical project data, stored in SharePoint 2007, away from your work place (at home or on a business...

6 Microsoft® Office Business Applications for Office SharePoint® Server 2007

I waited for this book to come out for some time, and as soon as I found out its out (from Eben last Wednesday) I ordered it through Amazon, I used the standard shipping options, so that means this will most likely be my present for Valentines (from me to me). Anyway, back to the book itself, this book presents my main professional focus (what you mostly hear about in my lectures and presentations) and what I believe to be the future of all enterprise applications. This is how OBAs and SharePoint...

Business Productivity Infrastructure Optimization University (BPIO U) Online

This is invaluable for your sales people. Since Microsoft decided to, not just tap, but actually make a strong presence in the Enterprise Content Management and Performance Management (Business Intelligence) Market, and for some Partners here locally that were more infrastructure and some Web Content Management (old SP 2003) orientated this practically happened over night. Although now more and more of the MS Partners are trying to venture into this space and have done great job of skilling up their...

SharePoint for Intranet

This is the second of my lectures which I held at the UCS conference with which, I must admit, I've had tons of fun (well I usually have a lot of fun doing lectures anyway). I've touched on all concepts of Enterprise Content Management as they pertain to building intranet solutions with SharePoint Server 2007. The core of it all being the Taxonomy, Standardisation, Enterprise Search Strategy, Provisioning, extensive concepts of Collaboration and Social Networking, and let's not forget...

Unified Communications & SharePoint Conference 2007

Once again I'm privileged to deliver two sessions at the upcoming: Microsoft Unified Communications & SharePoint Conference 2007 ( http://www.microsoft.com/southafrica/ucs/2007/default.mspx ) Which begins tomorrow...... Looking forward to seeing any of you who are going to be there, my sessions are the following: SRC303: Search in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007: Customizing...

Provisioning engines for SharePoint 2007

Since I've dealt with the implementation of my first ever Enterprise Content Management there has been a need for provisioning engines. In dealing with complex ECM systems with elaborate and complicated taxonomies with much room for error, people usually look to automate these processes where common logic and patterns can be found. Initial deployment of an ECM solution is usually basic, and it either affects a small unit in a big way (answers all ECM needs of that organisational unit) or big...

Microsoft Office Client Deployment – Document Migration Tools

This is yet another lecture I did at TechEd 2007 and it addresses one of the most important aspects of deploying Office System 2007 and MOSS 2007 solutions in a large enterprise, and that is migration of all the earlier office version documents on your computer, file shares, network etc. These are the tools that will make implementation of Office System 2007 (and SharePoint 2007) in your enterprise, above all a lot more possible to be used from day 1, also ideal, and effortless. You want your whole...

Doing Records Management in SharePoint 2007 Part 3 (Sending Content from SharePoint Server 2007 to the Records Repository site)

So now you have to declare your electronic document as records and send them to your Records Repository. What to do now? Well let's configure the Connection to Records Repository setting first. 1. Go to the Central Administration site from the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration. 2. Click Application Management. 3. On the Application Management page, in the External Service Connections section, click Records repository...

Doing Records Management in SharePoint 2007 Part 2 (Creating a Records Repository and Configuring the Retention Schedules)

Continuing from my last post, this where we venture into the world cool yet strict world of Records Management in SharePoint 2007. The following describes common steps that you would need to take to set up the Records Repository. Remember, we’re using typical SA government example for setting up the File Plan, hence why it would differ in some ways from Virtual Lab example on doing Records Management from Microsoft (MSDN Virtual Lab http://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/WebCastEventDetails.aspx?EventID...

Doing Records Management in SharePoint 2007 Part 1 (Intro)

This is a three part post that will show how to deploy and configure Records Management Solutions in SharePoint 2007. Records Management can be tricky business. Most businesses and corporates do it (manually) but they don't call it that way and it takes a while for them to make a connection when you try to explain what Records Management as part of their elaborative Enterprise Content Management suite actually is, and even if they make a connection, the mere notion of making this process electronic...

Main Competition to SharePoint Server 2007 - ECM Market Leaders

After one of my previous posts ( SharePoint 2007 Workflow (WWF) VS OpenText Livelink Workflow ), few people came back to me, asking me: What is Livelink? What is Livelink Workflow? Livelink ( http://www.opentext.com/ ) is one of the leading Enterprise Content Management offerings from OpenText. It’s permanently featuring in the fourth Gartner Quadrant ( http://www.gartner.com/ ) together with its two main competitors (also giants in the ECM industry) Documentum ( http://www.documentum.com/ owned...
