Microsoft Technology Interoperability Improvements for PHP

When I got back from the MVP Interoperability Workshop last week ( http://dotnet.org.za/willy/archive/2008/06/07/interoperability-highlight-t-3-days.aspx ) I got buried in work that has been waiting for me and haven't had a chance to put up my post event info, so, finally here it is. Way back in the days, first content management systems I dealt with were PHP based, like PHP-Nuke PostNuke, MyPHPNuke... etc, and this is basically where I fell in love with content management systems. They were...

South African Business Intelligence User Group Launch in Cape Town, a Success!! (Post Event Info)

Wow that was an awesome event, and perfect way start yet another great user group/community in Cape Town and Western Cape (we rule!!) and I'm proud that I was part of it. The event that was represented by prominent BI people from all sides of our industry also featured a brilliant presentation by John Swanepoel of Shoprite on one of the best examples I’ve seen on how BI should be done (Shoprite BI case study), I want to thank him for that and I hope to see more of his work in near future. Also...

Database Maintenance for SharePoint

In the spirit of my earlier post ( http://dotnet.org.za/zlatan/archive/2008/03/09/sql-server-database-mirroring-with-office-sharepoint-server-and-windows-sharepoint-services.aspx ), here's a really good whitepaper on Database Maintenance for SharePoint ( http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=111531&clcid=0x409 ) from Bill Baer ( http://blogs.technet.com/wbaer/ ). Here's where I found out about it: http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2008/02/28/database-maintenance-for-sharepoint...

SQL Server Database Mirroring with Office SharePoint Server and Windows SharePoint Services

Sometimes I lead a double (triple) life of being a SQL consultant guy. That guy that gets sent to recover lost and/or corrupt databases, troubleshoot, implement proper policies when it comes to SQL backup and maintenance (that DBA stuff), and above all architecting appropriate deployment of databases with different availability options. Yeah, and I'm one of those guys that thinks that Kimberly Tripp ( http://www.sqlskills.com/blogs/kimberly/ ) is one of the coolest people on the planet. I always...

Getting down with Microsoft Office Business Applications (OBAs)

Some of you might remember when Microsoft unveiled Microsoft Office Business Applications strategy at the TechEd US last year. Some of the more fortunate of us even had an opportunity to be there in person (not me). Basically the concept came after Microsoft decided to go into the whole Enterprise Content Management industry and compete with OpenText, EMC, and Filenet with it's very powerful, yours and my favourite, MS Sharepoint Server 2007. They made offering twice as competitive and twice...

Sharepoint 2007 Excel Services and Excel 2007 - Microsoft Business Intelligence

At the heart of today's Microsoft's Business Intelligence offering lies SQL 2005, this is where (chronologically) Microsoft began. Besides the relational engine, SQL Server provides three key components that support the three key technical activities, or verbs, of BI. Integration Services is the ETL tool. It lets you pull together data from multiple sources and create, or synthesize, new information. It's high-performance, with a very rich feature set. Analysis Services let's you...

My Trip to Redmond

I was pleasantly surprised that Microsoft decided to introduce Series 3 certification for SQL Technologies (I’m not really sure what is going to be a real name for the certification once it’s out, see attached file for more details) in order to recognize real SQL experts in the industry today. Many sales have been gained by some Oracle houses due to them having an OCM (Oracle Certified Master) in Oracle vs. Microsoft tenders, for a very sad fact that some clients didn’t recognize the true competencies...
